Discover more about Muzeu i Armëve

Muzeu i Armëve, or the Weapons Museum, resides within the imposing Gjirokastra Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site that dominates the city's skyline. The museum offers a glimpse into Albania's military past, displaying a range of weaponry and artifacts from the country's struggle for independence through the Second World War. The museum's collection includes arms from various periods, including examples from the time of Skanderbeg, Albania's national hero, and weapons from the late Ottoman period. However, the main focus is on the period between 1912 and 1944, particularly the Albanian Partisan resistance against the Italian and German occupation forces. Visitors can view rifles, machine guns, and artillery pieces captured from the Italians and Germans during WWII. The museum also displays war photographs, uniforms, medals, and personal items that belonged to soldiers, providing a personal connection to the historical events. The museum is located in a part of the castle that once served as a prison, built in 1932 by King Zog and later expanded by the communist regime. Writings on the walls from journals and letters of political prisoners are still visible. Some locals say executions were carried out in the prison yard.
