Discover more about Ruins of the Red Mosque

The Ruins of the Red Mosque, or Xhamia e Kuqe, are located within the historic Berat Castle and represent a significant piece of Albania's Ottoman past. Constructed in the 15th century, likely after the Ottoman conquest of Berat in 1417, the mosque is believed to be one of the oldest in Albania. According to the Ottoman explorer Evliya Çelebi, it was built during the reign of Bayazid II. Originally named Mosque of the ruler and Mosque of conquest, it served as a place of prayer for caravans and Ottoman soldiers. The mosque's construction is unique, with a cylindrical minaret made of red bricks and limestone, positioned to the left of the entrance. A small circular staircase inside the minaret leads to the top, providing a 360° view of the castle and the city. The mosque's basic dimensions were approximately 9.9 by 9.1 meters, and it had a wooden roof. Today, only the ruins remain, but the site still attracts visitors who wish to explore its storied past and enjoy the panoramic views from the minaret. The Red Mosque was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005 as part of the Historic Centres of Berat and Gjirokastra.
