Discover more about Castle of Gjirokastra

Perched atop a commanding hill, Gjirokastra Castle is one of the largest castles in the Balkans, offering panoramic views of the city and the Drino Valley. Its strategic importance has been recognized since ancient times, with evidence of habitation dating back to the 4th and 5th centuries. The castle's story is a tapestry woven from various threads of Albanian history. Originally constructed in the 12th and 13th centuries by the Despots of Epirus, it underwent significant expansion and reconstruction during the Ottoman period, particularly under the rule of Ali Pasha of Tepelena in the early 19th century. Over the centuries, Gjirokastra Castle has served many purposes. It has been a military stronghold, a seat of feudal lords, and a refuge for soldiers. During the reign of King Zog and later the Communist regime, it was used as a prison for political prisoners. Today, the castle is a museum complex, inviting visitors to explore its diverse history through well-preserved structures and exhibits. Inside the castle walls, you'll discover a captivating blend of historical artifacts and architectural styles. Highlights include the Clock Tower, the Armaments Museum (located in a former prison section), and the remains of an American spy plane that commemorates the Communist regime's struggles against Western powers. The castle also features a stage used for the National Folk Festival, towers, cisterns and former barracks. Informative signs detail the local animal species, and the Gjirokastra Museum recounts the city's history. A visit to Gjirokastra Castle offers a unique opportunity to step back in time and experience the rich and complex history of Albania.
