Getting There

  • Taxi

    From Apia, taxis are readily available and offer a direct route to the Robert Louis Stevenson Museum. Agree on a fare with the driver before departing; a typical fare from Apia to the museum should range from 20 to 30 WST. The journey takes approximately 10 minutes.

    Local buses depart from the main bus terminals behind the Fugalei Market and opposite the Flea Market at Savalalo in Apia. Look for the 'Vailima' bus or ask a local for assistance. The bus will drop you off near the entrance to the museum's estate. Bus fares are very affordable, typically costing only a few Tala. Be aware that bus schedules can be flexible, so allow for extra travel time.

    From Apia, follow Cross Island Road south. The museum is signposted and located in the village of Avele. Parking is available at the museum. Note that in Samoa, driving is on the left-hand side of the road.

The Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, also known as Villa Vailima, invites visitors to step back in time and immerse themselves in the world of the famed Scottish author during his time in Samoa. Robert Louis Stevenson, seeking respite for his tuberculosis, settled in Samoa in 1890 and spent his final years here until his death in 1894. The museum is located in the village of Avele, just south of Apia, along Cross Island Road.The beautifully restored colonial-era mansion showcases period-accurate replicas and original books, trinkets, and personal belongings. Guided tours, led by knowledgeable staff, share engaging stories about Stevenson's life and legacy in Samoa, where he was known as 'Tusitala' (Teller of Tales) by the locals.Visitors can also embark on the Tomb Trail, a scenic hike through the lush rainforest, leading to Stevenson's final resting place atop Mt. Vaea, offering panoramic views of Apia. The inscription on his tomb reads: “Here he lies where he longed to be/Home is the sailor, home from sea/And the hunter home from the hill.” The museum provides an educational and immersive experience for visitors of all ages.
