Discover more about Big Springs Lookout Tower

The Big Springs Lookout Tower, located within the Kaibab National Forest near Fredonia, Arizona, stands as a testament to early 20th-century forest conservation efforts. Constructed in 1934 by contractors from Kanab, Utah, for the U.S. Forest Service, the tower was designed as a fire lookout to protect the vast timber resources of the Kaibab Plateau. The tower itself is a 100-foot tall steel structure, featuring a 7-foot square cab at the top. This vantage point provided observers with an expansive view of the surrounding forest, enabling them to quickly spot and report wildfires. A wood-frame cabin, built in 1959, sits near the base of the tower, replacing an older log cabin and serving as living quarters for the lookout personnel. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988, the Big Springs Lookout Tower remains an important historical landmark. Visitors can climb the tower (when open) to experience the breathtaking views and learn about the history of forest fire detection. The surrounding area offers hiking trails and opportunities to explore the natural beauty of the Kaibab National Forest. The tower is also near the Big Springs Cabin Site, an administrative center listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
