Discover more about West Fork Oak Creek Trailhead

The West Fork Oak Creek Trailhead is the gateway to one of the most beloved trails in the Coconino National Forest. Located about 9.5 miles north of Sedona, the trail immerses hikers in a world of towering cliffs, a perennial stream, and diverse flora and fauna. The trail's popularity stems from its unique blend of natural wonders. Towering cliffs of Coconino Sandstone create a dramatic backdrop, while Douglas firs, box elders, and bigtooth maples provide a lush canopy. The constant presence of water, wild grapes, asters, lupines, mule deer, and Abert's squirrels further enriches the experience. The first 6 miles of Oak Creek Canyon, including the West Fork Trail, were designated a Research Natural Area in 1931, highlighting the area's extraordinary ecosystem. The hike begins at the Call of the Canyon Picnic Site, where visitors can also access the Thomas Point Trail and the Call of the Canyon Nature Trail. A short walk along the nature trail leads to the West Fork Trailhead, passing remnants of the Mayhew Lodge, a historic inn that once hosted movie stars, politicians, and writers. The lodge operated from 1926 to 1968 but was destroyed by a fire in 1980. The West Fork Trail itself is an easy-to-moderate 6.5-mile round trip, involving multiple creek crossings. Hikers typically navigate the crossings via stepping stones or shallow water. The trail is well-maintained for the first 3 miles, after which it becomes more rugged, requiring hikers to walk in the stream bed. The canyon walls, lush forest, and clear stream create a magical atmosphere, with new reasons to visit in every season.
