Discover more about Yavapai Geology Museum

The Yavapai Geology Museum, formerly known as the Yavapai Point Trailside Museum, has been a window into the Grand Canyon's geological past since 1928. Designed by architect Herbert Maier, the rustic stone building blends seamlessly with the landscape, constructed with indigenous Kaibab limestone and ponderosa pine. Located at Yavapai Point, the museum offers some of the most panoramic views of the Grand Canyon. Large picture windows provide unobstructed vistas of the canyon's ridges and the Colorado River below. Annotated displays identify key rock formations, making the vast landscape intelligible. Inside, exhibits explain the deposition of rock layers, the uplift of the Colorado Plateau, and the carving of the Grand Canyon. Visitors can explore three-dimensional models, artwork, and photographs that illustrate the canyon's geological history. A sculpted relief map provides a tactile understanding of the canyon's shape and landmarks. The Grand Canyon Conservancy operates a Park Store within the museum, offering books, souvenirs, and gifts. A 30-minute geology program is presented daily, offering insights into the canyon's formation and the science behind the landscape. The Trail of Time, an outdoor geoscience exhibit, begins just a short walk west of the museum along the Rim Trail.
