Getting There

• Car

  If you're driving from Tucson, take the Catalina Highway (also known as the Mount Lemmon Highway) north from the city. The highway is well-marked and will lead you directly into the Santa Catalina Mountains. As you ascend, you'll pass through a scenic landscape with various viewpoints. The drive takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic and road conditions. Once you reach the top, look for the signs indicating the Santa Catalina Natural Area. There is no entrance fee for the natural area, but be sure to check for any parking fees that may apply at specific trailheads.

• Public Transportation

  Public transportation options are limited in the Santa Catalina Mountains. However, the Sun Tran bus service offers routes within Tucson, and you can take bus route 107 to reach the base of the Catalina Highway. From the bus stop, you will need to arrange for a taxi or rideshare service to cover the remaining distance to the Santa Catalina Natural Area, as there are no direct public transport options that go up the mountain. Plan for additional costs for the taxi or rideshare, which can vary based on distance and demand.

• Bicycle

  For the more adventurous, biking to the Santa Catalina Natural Area is an option. You can rent a bike in Tucson and head towards Catalina Highway. Be prepared for a challenging ride, as the highway has steep sections and winding roads. Ensure you wear a helmet and follow all road safety rules. The ride from Tucson to the natural area can take a few hours, depending on your fitness level. Always check weather conditions before setting out, as mountain weather can change rapidly.
