Khosrov Forest State Reserve, nestled in the Ararat Province of Armenia, is a remarkable testament to the country's rich history and biodiversity. Founded in the 4th century (334-338) by King Khosrov III Kotak, the reserve stands as one of the oldest protected areas in the world. The king established the reserve to improve the natural conditions of Artashat and Dvin and to conserve and enrich the flora and fauna. It also served as a royal hunting ground, a place for military exercises, and entertainment. Spanning approximately 23,213.5 hectares, the reserve encompasses a diverse range of ecosystems, from arid steppes to lush forests, highland plateaus, and alpine meadows. This variety supports an astonishing array of endemic species, making Armenia a biodiversity hotspot. The reserve is home to over 1800 plant species, representing more than 50% of Armenia's flora, with 146 species listed in the Red Book. The fauna is equally rich, with 55 species of mammals, including the Transcaucasian Brown Bear, Boar, and Wolf, and 142 species of birds, many of which are also registered in the Red Book. Beyond its natural beauty, Khosrov Forest State Reserve is steeped in history and culture. The Silk Road once passed through this territory, and the reserve is dotted with historical landmarks, cave dwellings, early medieval monasteries, and cross-stones. Notable sites include the Aghjots Monastery Complex, Havuts Tar Monastery and the Kakavaberd Fortress. Visitors can also marvel at natural wonders such as the Vahagn and Astghik waterfalls, named after ancient pagan gods. In 1958, the area was officially designated as a state reserve to protect its unique ecosystems and biodiversity.
