Discover more about Kakavaberd (Keghi fortress)

Kakavaberd, also called Geghi Berd, Keghi Berd or Kegh, stands as a testament to Armenia's rich medieval history. Located in the Ararat province, inside the Khosrov Forest State Reserve, the fortress is built on a ridge, offering strategic views of the Azat River gorge. The fortress is inaccessible from three sides due to the steep terrain. First mentioned in the 9th-10th centuries by historian Hovhannes Draskhanakerttsi, Kakavaberd was controlled by the Bagratuni noble family. The fortress played a role in repelling Arab invasions, as noted in historical accounts. In the 11th century, it came under the control of the Pahlavuni family, and later, the Proshyan family in the 12th-13th centuries. The fortress was last mentioned in 1224 when Ivane Mkhargrdzeli sought refuge here after a battle near Garni. The walls of Kakavaberd stretch from north to east, with towers reaching 8 to 10 meters in height. The walls are 2 to 2.5 meters thick. Inside the fortress, visitors can explore the ruins of a church and other structures, offering a tangible connection to the past. Legend says that the fortress gets its name, Kakavaberd, from the Armenian word “kakav,” meaning “partridge”. This is connected to a tale of a priest curing Tamerlane, who in return offered to fulfill one humble wish of the priest. In a compassionate act, the priest asked Tamerlane to release as many prisoners as could fit within a small church. Generously, Tamerlane granted the wish, and as the liberated individuals entered the church, the priest miraculously transformed them into birds, and they soared into the sky. Visiting Kakavaberd offers a blend of historical exploration and natural beauty. The fortress provides panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Khosrov Forest State Reserve.
