Bubali Bird Sanctuary: A Tranquil Oasis for Birdwatchers in Aruba

Located on Aruba's west coast, near the high-rise hotels and the Aruba Butterfly Farm, the Bubali Bird Sanctuary is a haven for both migratory and resident birds. Established in 1980, the sanctuary spans approximately 20 hectares (49 acres) and features interconnected man-made ponds, initially created as part of a wastewater treatment facility. These wetlands have since become a vital resting and breeding ground for over 80 species of birds. Visitors can explore the sanctuary via well-maintained trails and strategically placed observation points, allowing for close encounters with the birds without disturbing their natural behaviors. The observation tower on the north side offers panoramic views of the sanctuary and its diverse avian inhabitants. Bird species commonly seen include American coots, common moorhens, white-cheeked pintails, yellow warblers, burrowing owls, bananaquits, black-necked stilts, lapwings, troupials, Caribbean parakeets, green herons, and various egrets. The sanctuary's peaceful ambiance, enhanced by the sounds of chirping birds and rustling leaves, provides a serene escape. While there are no specific opening hours, it's best to visit early morning or late afternoon when the birds are most active. Admission is free, making it an accessible attraction for all.
