Discover more about Friedhof Salzburg (St. Sebastian)

St. Sebastian Cemetery (Friedhof St. Sebastian), located in Salzburg's Neustadt district, offers a serene escape from the city's lively streets. Designed between 1595 and 1600 by Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, it was inspired by the Italian Campo Santo, creating a peaceful cloister-like atmosphere. The cemetery provides a final resting place for prominent Salzburg families and famous personalities. Among those interred here are Leopold Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's father, and Constanze Mozart, Wolfgang's wife, along with her second husband, Georg Nikolaus Nissen. The cemetery also holds the tomb of Theophrastus Bombastus von Hohenheim, better known as Paracelsus, a famous physician and alchemist of the Renaissance. A highlight is the Gabriel Chapel, the mausoleum of Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich, adorned with multicolored porcelain. Originally built with the adjacent St. Sebastian Church between 1505 and 1512, the church was later rebuilt in the late Baroque style between 1749 and 1753, following damage from a fire. The cemetery's architecture and notable burials provide a compelling insight into Salzburg's cultural and religious heritage. Visitors can explore the arcaded walkways, lush greenery, and delicate flowers, creating a picturesque setting for quiet contemplation.
