Discover more about Mozart's Birthplace

Mozart's Birthplace, or Mozarts Geburtshaus, stands proudly at Getreidegasse 9 in Salzburg, Austria, as one of the most visited museums globally. This historic yellow townhouse, also known as the Hagenauer House, is where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on January 27, 1756. The Mozart family resided here from 1747 to 1773, providing a nurturing environment for young Mozart's extraordinary musical talent. The building itself dates back to the 12th century and has a rich history, initially serving as part of the garden for the Benedictine Monks of St Peter's. Over the centuries, it passed through various owners before the Hagenauer family acquired it in 1703. In 1747, Leopold Mozart, Wolfgang's father, rented an apartment on the third floor, which became the family's home for 26 years. Inside the museum, visitors can explore exhibits spread across three floors, each dedicated to different aspects of Mozart's life. The exhibits include Mozart's childhood violin and harpsichord, family letters, portraits, and early editions of his music. The second floor showcases Mozart's passion for opera, featuring the clavichord he used to compose The Magic Flute. The first floor recreates living conditions in Mozart's time with period furniture. Today, the museum is curated by the International Mozarteum Foundation, which first opened it in 1880. It offers an intimate glimpse into Mozart's life, showcasing his early instruments, family life, and passion for opera. The bright yellow facade of Mozart's Birthplace is iconic and attracts millions of visitors each year.
