Discover more about Museum der Moderne Salzburg

The Museum der Moderne Salzburg is not just one, but two locations that create a dialogue between historical and contemporary spaces. The Rupertinum, an early Baroque palace, opened in 1983 in the heart of Salzburg's Old Town. In contrast, the museum on the Mönchsberg, opened in 2004, features modern architecture and offers panoramic views of the city. The museum's collection includes approximately 55,000 works, spanning from the 19th and 20th centuries to the present day. A significant portion of the collection is dedicated to graphic art and photography, including the Austrian Federal Photography Collection. Since 2014, the museum has also housed the Generali Foundation Collection, which focuses on conceptual art, media art, and performance-based art. The museum's exhibitions feature both Austrian and international artists, with a focus on Expressionist imagery and contemporary positions. The Mönchsberg location offers 2,300 square meters of exhibition space across four levels, while the Rupertinum houses the Generali Foundation Learning Centre, a research space open to the public. The museum is committed to being a place of encounter and discussion, fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and engaging with current and socially relevant topics.
