Discover more about Edmundsburg

Edmundsburg, perched atop the Mönchsberg, is a captivating historical landmark in Salzburg. Constructed between 1694 and 1696 by master builder Lorenz Stumpfegger for Abbot Edmund Sinnhuber of St Peter's Abbey, this three-story Baroque building is easily recognizable by its cubic shape, pyramid roof, and octagonal lantern. Originally owned by St. Peter's Abbey until 1834, the Edmundsburg later served as a school for boys. After serving various functions, including housing offices and a private library, the University of Salzburg acquired it in 2008 and undertook extensive renovations. Today, it houses the Salzburg Centre of European Union Studies and other university departments. While the Edmundsburg is not generally open to the public, visitors can still appreciate its architectural beauty from the outside and enjoy panoramic views of Salzburg's Old Town, including the Salzburger Dom. Access to the area is via the Clemens-Holzmeister staircase or an elevator from the Mönchsberg parking garage. The building also features a Latin inscription above the entrance, inviting visitors to praise God.
