Discover more about Richterhöhe

Richterhöhe, crowning the Mönchsberg at 507 meters, is Salzburg's highest point, offering unparalleled views of the city and surrounding landscapes. This elevated platform, steeped in history, provides a serene escape from the bustling streets below. Originally a strategic bastion forming part of the city's medieval defenses, Richterhöhe's fortifications date back to the Middle Ages. Remnants of ancient towers, including the Josefsturm and Michaelsturm, whisper tales of Salzburg's past. These towers, along with the imposing walls, once served as crucial watchtowers and powder depots. In 1906, the area was named in honor of Eduard Richter, a renowned geographer, historian, and alpinist. A memorial plaque commemorates Richter's legacy, recognizing his contributions to the region's natural and cultural heritage. Today, Richterhöhe is a beloved destination for locals and tourists alike, offering a harmonious blend of history, nature, and breathtaking views. The platform provides stunning vistas of the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the city's iconic landmark, as well as panoramic views of the Old Town's baroque architecture, the Salzach River, and the distant Alpine peaks. From this vantage point, visitors can also enjoy unique perspectives of Festungsberg mountain, Gaisberg, and even a glimpse of Leopoldskron where scenes from "The Sound of Music" were filmed. The surroundings of the Richterhöhe are attractive for extended walks. Walking on from there, you will get to a wall of bare rock which is popular for bouldering. Above this wall, you can see a castle-like villa at Mönchsberg 17 in which the famous Austrian writer and playwright Peter Handke lived as long as his daughter attended school in Salzburg.
