Discover more about Naturschauplatz: Gespaltener Stein

The Naturschauplatz Gespaltener Stein, or Split Rock Nature Site, is a captivating destination nestled in the scenic Pinnistal Valley, a side valley of the Stubaital. The massive dolomite rock appears as if it was dropped along the path, split asunder. The Gespaltener Stein is a testament to the powerful geological events that unfolded in the Pinnistal Valley thousands of years ago. The rock consists of dolomite, which makes up all of the dolomite ranges in the Stubai Valley. It is believed that the stone broke apart upon impact after tumbling down the mountainside. In 2018, a 3.5-meter-high stone figure was erected near the split rock, seemingly attempting to support the separated halves. The area is easily accessible and offers a beautiful backdrop for a leisurely hike. North of the Pinnisalm, more dolomite blocks are scattered, further evidence of the ancient rockslides. The blocks largely originated from a large breakout niche on the summit flank of the Elfer Spitze. A visit to the Gespaltener Stein provides an opportunity to witness the raw power of nature and appreciate the geological history of the Stubai Alps.
