Discover more about Schremser Gleggmire Hochmoor Nature Park

The Schremser Gleggmire Hochmoor Nature Park, nestled in the Waldviertel region of Lower Austria, offers a captivating journey into a unique and ancient landscape. This sprawling peat bog, the largest in Lower Austria, stretches across approximately 300 hectares, a third of which has been under protection as a nature park since 2000. The park's origins trace back to the last ice age, around 10,000 years ago, with peat extraction significantly altering the landscape until the 1980s. Today, the area stands as a testament to nature's resilience, showcasing various stages of regeneration and offering a sanctuary for rare and specialized flora and fauna. Visitors can explore diverse habitats, from wildflower-dotted meadows to dense bog forests. Keep an eye out for the moor frog, yellow iris, yellow water lily, and carnivorous sundew. Key attractions include the Himmelsleiter (ladder to heaven), a 20-meter high observation tower offering panoramic views of the moor. The park also features the UnterWasserReich visitor center, with interactive exhibits about the moor's ecology and history. A barrier-free wooden walkway called the Prügelsteg allows visitors with mobility impairments to experience the beauty of the moor. Three hiking trails lead through the nature park.
