Discover more about Absheron National Park

Absheron National Park, located on the southeastern tip of the Absheron Peninsula in Azerbaijan, offers a unique blend of desert landscapes and coastal beauty. Established in 2005 on the foundation of the Absheron State Nature Preserve (originally founded in 1969), the park spans 783 hectares, aiming to protect the region's unique flora, fauna, and geological features. Historically, the Absheron Peninsula served as a crucial stopover for migratory birds, connecting Europe and Asia. The park's creation aimed to safeguard this fragile ecosystem. While the park was initially established to protect gazelles and Caspian seals, sightings of these animals have become less common in recent years. However, the park remains a haven for a variety of other wildlife. Birdwatching is a major draw, with over 50 species of birds inhabiting the park, especially during migration seasons (mid-April to mid-May and November). Keep an eye out for species like the black-headed gull, great black-headed gull, whooper swan, mute swan, mallard, and various raptors. The lagoons and shores also attract great egrets, grey herons, great cormorants, and Eurasian coots. The park's mammalian residents include jackals, foxes, badgers, and hares, adapted to the arid environment. Historically, the Absheron Peninsula marked the easternmost reach of the Asiatic lion in the Caucasus until the 10th century, and the Caspian tiger occasionally ventured here from the Talysh Mountains before its extinction in the 20th century. The park's flora is adapted to the semi-arid climate, with approximately 25 plant species. Coastal sand plants, meadows with jigilgamish and paz grass, and one-year saline grasses are common. Ephemerals flourish in early spring, adding a burst of color to the landscape.
