Discover more about Alley of Honor

The Alley of Honor, or Fəxri Xiyaban, is more than just a cemetery; it's a powerful symbol of Azerbaijani national identity and a poignant reminder of the individuals who have shaped the nation's history. Located on a hillside overlooking Baku, the Alley offers a serene and reflective atmosphere, inviting visitors to contemplate the lives and legacies of Azerbaijan's most celebrated figures. Established in 1948 by the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR, the Alley of Honor was created as a final resting place for prominent Azerbaijanis and those closely affiliated with the country. Over the years, it has grown to encompass over 280 burials, representing a diverse array of fields and accomplishments. Among those buried here are three Presidents of Azerbaijan: Heydar Aliyev, Ayaz Mutalibov and Abulfaz Elchibey. Heydar Aliyev, who served as the third president and is widely considered the architect of modern Azerbaijan, has a particularly prominent gravesite, reflecting his significant role in the country's history. The Alley also holds the remains of numerous scientists, including prominent academics and researchers who contributed to Azerbaijan's intellectual and scientific advancement. Renowned artists, composers, musicians, and actors are interred here, their contributions to the cultural richness of Azerbaijan forever remembered. The monuments aren't static portraits like other cemeteries. The statues above the cemetery tell the entire story of the person buried. The site also provides stunning panoramic views of Baku, allowing visitors to appreciate the city's beauty and its strategic location on the Caspian Sea. The Alley of Honor is not to be confused with the nearby Alley of Martyrs, also known as Martyrs' Lane. While both sites are dedicated to honoring Azerbaijani heroes, the Alley of Martyrs commemorates those who lost their lives in conflicts.
