Discover more about Baku State Philharmonic Hall

The Muslim Magomayev Azerbaijan State Academic Philharmonic Hall stands as a testament to Azerbaijan's rich musical heritage and architectural elegance. Located on Istiglaliyyat Street in the heart of Baku, this iconic building is more than just a concert hall; it's a living museum, a historical landmark, and a vibrant center for cultural exchange. Constructed between 1910 and 1912, the Philharmonic Hall was commissioned by Baku's affluent class, reflecting the city's burgeoning wealth during the oil boom era. Designed by Gabriel Ter-Mikelov, the building's architecture is a captivating fusion of Italian Renaissance (exterior) and German Rococo (interior) styles. Its design was inspired by the opulent Monte Carlo Casino, particularly l'Opéra de Monte-Carlo, lending it an air of sophistication and grandeur. Originally, the building served as the Summer Center for Public Gatherings, an exclusive club for Baku's elite. It hosted banquets, entertainment, and social gatherings. During the Russian Civil War, it transformed into a venue for public rallies. From 1918 to 1920, it even hosted the meetings of the first parliament of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. In 1936, it was repurposed as the home of the Philharmonic Society. Significant restoration occurred between 1936 and 1937 to accommodate its new role. On August 11, 1937, it was officially named in honor of the composer Muslim Magomayev. Today, the Philharmonic Hall boasts two main halls: the Summer Hall with 1,100 seats and the Winter Hall with 610 seats, connected by a single stage. This allows for a diverse range of performances throughout the year, catering to different audiences and musical genres. Adjacent to the Baku fortress, the hall is complemented by the historic Philharmonic Garden, initially established in 1830 as Mikhaelovsky Garden. Renovations in the 1970s and 2007 have preserved its beauty.
