Discover more about Saint John’s Hospital

Saint John’s Hospital (Sint-Janshospitaal) in Bruges is a remarkable testament to medieval care and art, with a history stretching back to the mid-12th century. Founded as a hospital for sick pilgrims, travelers, and the poor, it stands as one of Europe's oldest surviving hospital buildings. Over the centuries, the hospital expanded, incorporating a monastery and convent. By the 19th century, it had grown into a complex with eight wards surrounding a central building. The hospital provided continuous medical aid to the city's residents, emphasizing kindness and comfort. It even offered lodging and free meals to overnight travelers and pilgrims. The hospital was self-sufficient for extended periods, featuring its own church, apothecary, orchards, gardens, bakery, brewery, and staff accommodations. Isolation wards were also present to prevent the spread of infection. No longer functioning as a hospital since 1977, when it was relocated to a modern facility , the complex now serves as a museum, showcasing its rich history and art. A highlight is the Hans Memling Museum, which features works by the famed German-Flemish painter who resided in Bruges from 1465. Memling's masterpieces, including the St. Ursula Shrine, the Triptych of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist, the Triptych of the Adoration of the Magi, and the Lamentation of Christ, remain in their original location. The museum also displays hospital records, medical instruments, and other art, providing insight into the lives of those who lived and worked there.
