Discover more about Duque de Caxias Fort

The Duque de Caxias Fort, or Forte do Leme, is perched atop Morro do Leme, a small hill at the eastern end of Copacabana Beach. Constructed between 1776 and 1779, the fort was originally named Forte da Vigia (Watchtower Fort) and served as a key defensive point for Guanabara Bay. Its strategic location allowed it to warn other fortifications of approaching enemy vessels. Over the years, the fort has undergone several name changes, becoming Forte do Leme in 1895 and finally Forte Duque de Caxias in 1935. It played a role in various military events, including revolts and conflicts throughout the 20th century. Today, the fort is maintained by the Brazilian Army's Personnel Studies Center and is open to the public for visitation. Visitors can explore the fort's historical exhibits, which offer insights into its past and the lives of the soldiers who served there. The main draw, however, is the panoramic views. From the fort, you can see the entire stretch of Copacabana Beach, the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain, and the Cagarras Islands. The fort is also surrounded by a protected area of the Atlantic Forest, providing opportunities to spot monkeys and other wildlife along the trail leading up to the fort. The hike to the top takes about 20 minutes and is considered relatively easy, making it accessible to most visitors. The path is well-maintained and offers several Stations of the Cross along the way.
