Discover more about Quinta da Boa Vista

Quinta da Boa Vista, meaning "Estate of the Good View," is a sprawling park with a rich history in Rio de Janeiro's São Cristóvão neighborhood. Originally part of a Jesuit farm, it became the property of a Portuguese merchant, Elias António Lopes, who built a manor house in 1803 and named it for its Guanabara Bay views. In 1808, the Royal Family of Portugal arrived in Brazil, and Lopes donated his estate to Prince Regent John VI, who transformed it into a royal residence. The palace was renovated between 1816 and 1821 by English architect John Johnston and became known as the Paço de São Cristóvão. It served as the residence for the Brazilian Imperial family until the Republic was proclaimed in 1889. Dom Pedro II, the last Emperor of Brazil, spent his childhood here. Today, Quinta da Boa Vista is a popular park for locals and tourists alike. It features gardens designed by French landscaper Auguste Glaziou, lakes, and historical buildings. The park was home to the National Museum, which suffered a devastating fire in 2018, but a partial reopening with restored exhibits is expected in June 2025. Visitors can also enjoy the Rio de Janeiro Zoo, with its diverse collection of animals. Other attractions include the Temple of Apollo, paddle boats on the lake, and sports fields.
