Discover more about Quinta da Boa Vista

Quinta da Boa Vista, meaning "Estate of the Good View," is a sprawling public park with a rich history dating back to the early 19th century. Originally part of a Jesuit farm, the land was later owned by a Portuguese merchant, Elias António Lopes, who built a manor house with a stunning view of Guanabara Bay. In 1808, he gifted the estate to Prince Regent John VI, transforming it into a royal residence. The palace underwent renovations and became known as the Paço de São Cristóvão. After Brazil declared itself a republic, the imperial family left, and the palace became the National Museum in 1892. Sadly, a major fire in 2018 destroyed much of the museum's collection, but there are plans for a partial reopening in June 2025. Today, Quinta da Boa Vista is a popular destination for locals and tourists. Visitors can explore the park's extensive green areas, rent pedal boats on the lake, and visit the BioParque, formerly the Rio de Janeiro Zoo. The park also features a Chinese-style pagoda and a neoclassical pergola. The entrance to the zoo features a monumental English-style gate that once stood before the São Cristóvão Palace. The park provides a green escape within the city.
