History of Inglewood

Tongva Country and Centinela Lands

Before European settlement, the area now called Inglewood formed part of the homeland of the Tongva, an Indigenous people whose territory included much of the Los Angeles Basin and nearby coastal region. The landscape of seasonal waterways, grasslands and coastal plain supported settlements, travel and trade. Spanish colonial expansion in the late eighteenth century brought missions, forced labour and profound disruption to Tongva communities. In the nineteenth century, the land became associated with the Centinela ranch, whose name survives in local geography and institutions. The Centinela Adobe, built in 1834 for ranchero Ygnacio Machado, is the clearest surviving physical reminder of this period, although the area's history extends well beyond the adobe and the ranching era.

Daniel Freeman and Early American Settlement

After California became part of the United States, Daniel Freeman acquired land connected with the Centinela ranch and developed a substantial agricultural property. Freeman is commonly regarded as the founder of modern Inglewood, and the settlement that grew around his holdings took shape during the late nineteenth century. Agriculture, particularly grain and dairy production, benefited from the area's relatively level terrain and access to the expanding Los Angeles market. The arrival of rail connections helped link the community with Los Angeles and other parts of Southern California. The adobe, later preserved through local historical efforts, belongs to this wider transition from Mexican-era ranching to American commercial farming and suburban development.

Incorporation and Suburban Growth

Inglewood incorporated as a city in 1908, during a period when Los Angeles County was changing rapidly through rail expansion, land subdivision and population growth. Residential neighbourhoods spread across former agricultural land, and civic institutions developed around a recognisable municipal centre. The city's growth was influenced by its proximity to Los Angeles, the emerging port and industrial districts, and the coast. Like many communities in the region, Inglewood was also shaped by discriminatory housing practices and racial segregation, while African American and other minority communities gradually established stronger social, religious and commercial networks. The city visible today therefore reflects both planned suburban expansion and the contributions of residents who built community under unequal conditions.

From Hollywood Park to the Forum

Inglewood became a major entertainment and sporting location in the twentieth century. Hollywood Park Racetrack opened in 1938 and operated for decades, drawing visitors to the city before closing in 2013. The Forum opened in 1967 and became associated with professional basketball, hockey and major concerts; although its sporting role later changed, it continued as a significant live-events venue. These developments gave Inglewood a regional identity extending beyond residential suburbia. They also influenced traffic patterns, employment and the city's relationship with the wider Los Angeles entertainment economy.

A New Entertainment District

The redevelopment of the former Hollywood Park site transformed a large portion of Inglewood in the early twenty-first century. SoFi Stadium opened in 2020 as the home of the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, while the surrounding Hollywood Park project introduced new public spaces, shops, restaurants and housing.
