- Bring plenty of water, especially during warmer months, as there is very little shade along the trail.
- Arrive early, especially on weekends and holidays, as the parking lot at the trailhead tends to fill up quickly.
- Wear sturdy hiking boots, as the trail surface is mostly packed dirt with some rocky sections.
- Consider hiking the loop clockwise to ascend to the mine along a converted road, offering a more gradual climb.

Driving
From Park Boulevard within Joshua Tree National Park, drive south on Keys View Road for approximately 2.4 miles. Turn left onto the dirt road leading to the Lost Horse Mine Trailhead. Continue to the end of the dirt road to reach the parking area. Parking is free, but the lot can fill quickly, especially during peak season. There is no fee to hike the trail beyond the park entrance fee.

Walking
From the Lost Horse Mine Trailhead parking area, the trail begins at the far side of the lot. Follow the wide, double-track trail as it ascends slightly. The path is well-marked and easy to follow. Stay on the main trail to reach the Lost Horse Mine. There are interpretive displays near the mine site.
