Getting There

    From Santa Cruz, drive north on Highway 1 for approximately 17 miles. The Rancho del Oso Nature and History Center is located just before the Waddell Creek Bridge; look for a small brown 'Nature Center' sign and turn right onto the dirt road. From Half Moon Bay, drive south on Highway 1 for approximately 30 miles. The entrance to the Nature and History Center will be on your left, just after crossing the Waddell Creek Bridge. Parking is free.

Rancho del Oso Nature and History Center serves as an engaging introduction to the diverse ecosystems and history of the Waddell Valley, the coastal section of Big Basin Redwoods State Park. Located 17 miles north of Santa Cruz on Highway 1, the center is housed in the former home of Hulda Hoover McLean, daughter of Theodore Hoover (brother of President Herbert Hoover). The center features interactive exhibits that highlight the area's unique flora, fauna, and cultural heritage. Visitors can explore displays detailing the valley's seven distinct ecosystems, from coastal strand to redwood forests, and learn about the native wildlife, including bobcats and steelhead salmon. The center also recounts the area's history, from the Ohlone Costanoan peoples to the early settlers and the Hoover family's legacy. Outside, visitors can explore trails that wind through the diverse habitats of Rancho del Oso. The Marsh Trail offers a leisurely stroll through the Theodore J. Hoover Natural Preserve, teeming with birdlife and other wildlife. The nearby Waddell Beach is renowned for windsurfing and kite surfing. The new Rancho del Oso Welcome Center, opened in October 2023, features murals depicting the local wildlife and flora, along with interactive educational displays.
