Discover more about Chapel of the Transfiguration (Tahoe City, California)

The Chapel of the Transfiguration, affectionately known as the Outdoor Chapel, is a testament to faith and architectural harmony in Tahoe City. Consecrated in 1909, this chapel has been a spiritual haven for over a century. The chapel is located off Highway 89, about a mile south of Tahoe City, surrounded by pines and native vegetation. The chapel's construction was made possible by the D.L. Bliss family, who donated land near their Tahoe Tavern hotel. Robert M. Watson and his son Robert H. Watson designed the chapel in the Arts and Crafts style, using local granite and timber to blend it with its natural setting. The exterior features rough-hewn granite walls and exposed wooden beams. Large windows, some with stained glass by Jessie Van Brunt, fill the interior with light. Originally serving a small community and summer visitors, the chapel quickly became a popular wedding venue. While the Tahoe Tavern was demolished in 1969, the Chapel of the Transfiguration has endured, hosting services, weddings, and moments of reflection. In 2011, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.
