Discover more about Castle Rock Regional Recreation Area

Castle Rock Regional Recreation Area, a part of the East Bay Regional Park District, is located within Diablo Foothills Regional Park in Walnut Creek, California. This 18,000-acre park offers a diverse landscape of oak woodlands and striking sandstone formations carved by Pine Creek. Historically, the area was home to the Ohlone people, who utilized the land for sustenance and spiritual practices. Later, the area saw logging and agriculture before being preserved as a park. Judge Joseph Welch purchased a 60-acre parcel in 1908 and opened it to the public, recognizing its scenic value. Today, visitors can enjoy a variety of activities, including hiking, rock climbing, and swimming. The park features several trails for different skill levels, with popular destinations like Castle Rock, Goat Rock, and Castle Rock Falls. A seasonal swimming pool is open when lifeguards are on duty, offering a refreshing escape. Picnic areas are available for reservation or drop-in use. Castle Rock's unique sandstone formations originated millions of years ago from sandy sediments deposited in an inland sea. These formations, sculpted by erosion, create a dramatic landscape for outdoor enthusiasts to explore.
