Discover more about Walnut Creek Historical Society

The Walnut Creek Historical Society is a non-profit organization committed to safeguarding and sharing the rich history of the Walnut Creek area. Established in 1967 by the Walnut Creek Women's Club, the society operates from the Shadelands Ranch Museum, a historical house museum, and research center. The society's primary mission involves collecting, preserving, and interpreting local history through various initiatives. These include maintaining the Shadelands Ranch Museum, providing local history programs for schools, and organizing tours of historical sites in downtown Walnut Creek. The Shadelands Ranch Museum itself is located in the former Hiram Penniman ranch house. The house was given to the City of Walnut Creek in 1970, and Mary Liddecoat suggested it be used as a historical museum. The museum officially opened in 1972. Visitors can explore exhibits featuring letters and papers from the Penniman family, who were significant landowners and farmers in the area. The society also maintains extensive collections of photographs, clipping files, and records from various local organizations, offering a glimpse into Walnut Creek's past. The guided history walking tours, led by docents, are typically offered from March through October and are free to the public.
