Getting there

Car & Ferry

From Halifax, drive approximately 286 km (3.5 hours) via Highway 101 to Digby, then take Highway 217 down Digby Neck to East Ferry. A free ferry operates from East Ferry to Tiverton on Long Island, departing East Ferry every half hour. From the Tiverton ferry landing, it's a short 4 km (5-minute) drive to the Balancing Rock trailhead; follow the signs. The Petit Passage Ferry is free.

Walking

From the Balancing Rock parking area, the trail is a 2.5 km (1.5 mile) out-and-back hike. Follow the well-maintained gravel and boardwalk path. Descend the 235 steps to the viewing platform. The hike to the rock and back takes approximately 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.

Balancing Rock stands as a testament to the power of nature and the beauty of Nova Scotia's coastline. Located on Long Island, near Tiverton, this narrow, vertical column of basalt appears to defy gravity as it perches on the cliffs overlooking St. Mary's Bay. Formed over 200 million years ago from cooling volcanic rock, the relentless weathering and erosion have sculpted the rock into its precarious position.The 2.5 km trail to Balancing Rock is well-maintained, featuring gravel paths and boardwalk sections that wind through lush greenery. Interpretive panels along the way offer insights into the area's unique vegetation and geological history. A descent of approximately 235 steps leads to viewing platforms, providing stunning perspectives of Balancing Rock and the surrounding bay. The coastal views are outstanding, with the rock appearing as though it could topple into the sea at any moment.Local legend tells of fishermen attempting to pull the rock down with ropes, but their efforts were unsuccessful, highlighting the rock's resilience. The site offers a short but rewarding hike, showcasing the natural landscape and the dramatic Balancing Rock.
