    If you are in the Centro Histórico area, start at the Plaza de Bolívar, a central hub in Tunja. From the plaza, head south on Calle 19 toward Carrera 9. After about 5 minutes, you will reach Carrera 9. Turn left onto Carrera 9 and continue walking for about 4 blocks. You will see the Cathedral Basilica of St. James the Apostle on your right at Cra. 9 #19-44.

The Cathedral Basilica of St. James the Apostle, also known as Tunja Cathedral, stands as a testament to Colombia's rich religious and architectural heritage. As the oldest cathedral in Colombia, its history dates back to the early days of Spanish colonization. The cathedral is located on the eastern side of the Plaza de Bolivar in the historic center of Tunja. Construction of the cathedral began in 1567, commissioned by Juan de Castellanos and Gonzálo Suárez Rendón, with Pedro Gutiérrez as the architect. The original church was a simple structure with a thatched roof where Augustinian Friar Vicente de Requejada officiated the first mass in 1539. Bartolomé Carrión designed the Renaissance-style façade, with work carried out from 1598 to 1600. The single bell tower was added after 1610. The cathedral's architectural style is primarily Isabeline, with Renaissance and neoclassical influences. The interior features three naves with side chapels, separated by rows of columns. Inside, visitors can admire stunning altars, intricate woodwork, and beautiful artworks. The serene atmosphere provides a perfect backdrop for reflection and meditation. The Cathedral Basilica of St. James the Apostle is not only a place of worship but also a significant cultural landmark.
