Discover more about Balcony House

Balcony House, nestled within Mesa Verde National Park, is a remarkable testament to the ingenuity of the Ancestral Pueblo people. This mid-sized cliff dwelling, comprising 40 rooms, is perched dramatically in a cliff alcove overlooking Soda Canyon, approximately 700 feet above the canyon floor. The canyon provided essential resources for the daily lives of its inhabitants. Built around the 13th century, Balcony House showcases the architectural skills of the Ancestral Puebloans, who farmed the mesa tops before constructing their homes in these cliffside alcoves. The dwelling derives its name from a well-preserved balcony, a unique feature among Mesa Verde's cliff dwellings. Balconies served not only as access points to the second story but also as spaces for working and drying food. Kivas, circular subterranean structures used for religious rituals and political gatherings, are also present. Exploring Balcony House is an adventurous experience. Ranger-guided tours lead visitors through a series of ladders, including a 32-foot climb, a narrow 12-foot tunnel, and steep stone steps. These obstacles offer a taste of the challenges faced by the Ancestral Puebloans in their daily lives. The tour provides a unique opportunity to witness how room and passageway construction evolved over time. Archaeological excavations in 1910, led by Jesse Nusbaum, played a crucial role in preserving and stabilizing Balcony House. Today, it stands as a tribute to both its builders and those who worked to protect it.
