Discover more about Mesa Top Sites

The Mesa Top Sites in Mesa Verde National Park offer a captivating journey through the architectural evolution of the Ancestral Puebloans, showcasing 700 years of history. Located along the Mesa Top Loop Road, this area allows visitors to explore the remains of villages built upon each other, each representing a significant advancement in construction techniques. Here, you'll find the foundations of early jacal homes, followed by villages constructed with single-stone-wide sandstone masonry. The third village, dating back to around 1075, demonstrates a major innovation: double-stone, rubble-core masonry. This sturdy construction enabled the building of larger, multi-story room blocks and towers, some of which may have served as signaling stations, astronomical observatories, or watchtowers. The kiva, a vital part of Ancestral Puebloan life, is also prominently featured at the Mesa Top Sites. Over time, the kiva evolved into what archeologists refer to as the Mesa Verde style kiva. As villages grew in size and population, agriculture became increasingly important, leading to the development of check dams and stone terraces to prevent water runoff and soil erosion. Exploring the Mesa Top Sites provides a comprehensive understanding of how the Ancestral Puebloans adapted and innovated over centuries.
