Discover more about Cliff Palace

Cliff Palace, located in Mesa Verde National Park, is the largest and most famous cliff dwelling in Mesa Verde National Park. Constructed by the Ancestral Puebloans between 1190 and 1280 CE, it once housed approximately 100 people within its 150 rooms and 23 kivas (rooms for religious rituals). The structures are built primarily from sandstone, wooden beams, and mortar. The sandstone was shaped using harder stones, and mortar, a mixture of local soil, water, and ash, was used to bind the stones together. Tiny pieces of stone called "chinking" were added to fill gaps within the mortar, enhancing the walls' structural stability. Many walls were adorned with colored earthen plasters, though these have eroded over time. The relatively small size of the doorways reflects the stature of the Ancestral Puebloans, with average men standing around 5'4" to 5'5" (163-165 cm) and women closer to 5' (152 cm). Archaeologists believe Cliff Palace was a social and administrative hub with significant ceremonial importance, possibly housing more clans than other Mesa Verde communities. A prominent square tower, rising 26 feet (7.9 m) and featuring four levels, stands as the tallest structure in Mesa Verde. Though in ruins by the 1800s, the National Park Service has carefully restored it. Visitors can explore Cliff Palace only through ranger-guided tours, which typically last an hour. These tours involve descending uneven stone steps and climbing ladders, with an elevation change of 100 feet (30 m) over a 0.25-mile (0.4 km) walk. The Cliff Palace Loop Road offers overlooks for viewing the dwelling.
