Discover more about Soda Canyon Overlook South

The Soda Canyon Overlook Trail provides a unique window into the world of the Ancestral Puebloans who inhabited Mesa Verde for over 700 years. This easy, 1.2-mile roundtrip trail meanders through a mesa top pinyon-juniper forest to three overlooks at the edge of Soda Canyon. From the overlooks, hikers are rewarded with views of the canyon's dramatic landscape and several cliff dwellings. The most notable view is of Balcony House, a remarkably well-preserved cliff dwelling nestled high in a cliff alcove across the canyon. The canyon was named for the white, calcium carbonate deposits visible below the rim. These are the evaporative remains of seeps springs once used by the Ancestral Pueblo people. The trail itself is relatively flat, making it accessible for families and those seeking a less strenuous hike. Along the way, keep an eye out for mature pinyon pine and Utah juniper trees, as well as wildlife such as mule deer, wild turkey, and various bird species. The trail is open from late spring to December 1, offering a chance to experience the beauty of Mesa Verde's natural landscape and glimpse into its rich cultural history.
