Getting There

    From Estes Park, drive west on Highway 36 and enter Rocky Mountain National Park. Continue past the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center and turn left onto Bear Lake Road. Follow Bear Lake Road to either the Bear Lake Trailhead or the Glacier Gorge Trailhead. Parking at these trailheads is limited, especially during peak season. Consider using the park's shuttle system from the Park & Ride to avoid parking hassles.

  • Public Transport

    From the Estes Park Visitor Center, take the Hiker Shuttle to the Park & Ride transit hub on Bear Lake Road. From there, transfer to the free Bear Lake or Moraine Park shuttle to reach the Bear Lake and Glacier Gorge Trailheads. The Hiker Shuttle requires reservations, which can be made on Recreation.gov for a small fee. A park pass is also required. The Hiker Shuttle operates from late May to mid-October. Bear Lake and Moraine Park shuttles are free and operate from late May to mid-October. They run frequently, with the Bear Lake Shuttle running every 10-15 minutes and the Moraine Park Shuttle running every 30-60 minutes. Hiker Shuttle reservation: $2.00. Park entry fee (if not possessing a park pass): $30 per vehicle for a 1-day pass, $35 per vehicle for a 7-day pass.

    From the Bear Lake Trailhead, follow the signs to Alberta Falls and then continue onto the Loch Vale Trail. From the Glacier Gorge Trailhead, follow the signs to Alberta Falls and then continue onto the Loch Vale Trail. The trail is well-marked, but be prepared for a steep scramble just before reaching Lake of Glass.

Situated above Timberline Falls, this subalpine lake is a highlight on the challenging but rewarding hike along the Glacier Gorge and Loch Vale Trails. The journey to Lake of Glass begins at either the Glacier Gorge Trailhead or the Bear Lake Trailhead. The route passes Alberta Falls and continues to the Loch Vale Trail, leading hikers past the picturesque Loch and the impressive Timberline Falls. Just beyond Timberline Falls, a short, steep scramble is required to reach the Lake of Glass. At the lake, hikers can relax on the large rocks along the shore and enjoy the serene atmosphere. The views are spectacular, with The Sharkstooth visible to the west and Thatchtop to the east. In winter, the lake freezes over, creating a unique landscape of icy crests and snow drifts.
