Getting There

  • Driving

    The Tundra Communities Trailhead is located off Trail Ridge Road (US-34) in Rocky Mountain National Park. From Estes Park, drive west on US-34 for approximately 21.7 miles. From Grand Lake, travel east on US-34 for about 27 miles. The trailhead is at the Rock Cut area. A timed-entry permit may be required to enter the park between late May and mid-October. Parking is available at the Rock Cut parking lot, but it fills quickly during peak season. Note: Trail Ridge Road is typically closed from mid-October through May or early June due to snow. Check the road status before heading out.

  • Shuttle

    During the summer, a free shuttle system operates within Rocky Mountain National Park. However, there is no shuttle service directly to the Tundra Communities Trailhead. To access the trailhead using the shuttle, take the shuttle to the Bear Lake area, and hike approximately 1.5 miles to the Tundra Communities Trailhead. Check the shuttle schedule for operating dates and times, as it varies by season. Note: A timed-entry permit may still be required to enter the park, even when using the shuttle.
