  • Check the weather forecast before you go. Conditions can change rapidly at high elevations, and the trail is exposed to wind and sun.
  • Bring water and snacks. Staying hydrated and fueled will help you combat altitude sickness.
  • Wear layers. Even in summer, temperatures at the top can be surprisingly cool.
  • Reservations may be required. From late May to mid-October, a timed entry reservation might be necessary to enter Rocky Mountain National Park.

Getting There

  • Driving

The Alpine Ridge Trail is accessed via Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. From Estes Park, drive west on US-36 to the park's entrance. Continue on Trail Ridge Road (US-34) to the Alpine Visitor Center. Parking is available at the visitor center, but can be limited during peak season. A timed entry permit may be required to enter the park between late May and mid-October. Park entrance fees apply. As of July 2025, a 1-day pass is $30 per vehicle, or an annual pass is $80.

  • Shuttle

During the summer, Rocky Mountain National Park offers a free shuttle system that can be used to access various trailheads along Bear Lake Road. However, the shuttle does not directly service the Alpine Visitor Center. To reach the Alpine Ridge Trail via shuttle, you would need to take the shuttle to a connecting point and then potentially rely on a ride-sharing service or other transportation to reach Trail Ridge Road and the Alpine Visitor Center. This option may involve significant time and planning. Check the RMNP website for shuttle schedules and routes.

Discover more about Alpine Ridge Trail

Located near the summit of Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park, the Alpine Ridge Trail offers an accessible high-altitude experience. This short but challenging paved trail climbs from the Alpine Visitor Center, the highest in the US Park system, to a vantage point above 12,000 feet. Known as "Huffers Hill" due to its steep grade and thin air, the trail provides stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding alpine tundra, the Never Summer Mountains, and, on clear days, even the plains of Wyoming. Originally a dirt path, the trail was paved in 2010 to combat erosion and protect the delicate tundra ecosystem. The reconstruction included the addition of over 200 steps, making the climb more manageable but still demanding. Despite its short length (0.6 miles round trip), the Alpine Ridge Trail offers a unique opportunity to experience the beauty and fragility of the alpine environment with relatively little effort. Be prepared for wind and cooler temperatures, even in summer. Wildflowers abound in spring and early summer, adding splashes of color to the landscape. Marmots and pikas are also frequently spotted along the trail. The Alpine Visitor Center offers amenities such as a gift shop, cafe, and restrooms. Note that Trail Ridge Road and the Alpine Ridge Trail are typically open from late May/early June to mid-October, depending on weather conditions. A timed entry reservation may be required to enter the park.
