Discover more about Lava Cliffs Overlook

The Lava Cliffs Overlook, situated along Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park, presents a captivating view of a rare volcanic landscape. Despite its name, the overlook doesn't showcase an active volcanic site but rather reveals cliffs composed of volcanic rock dating back 28 to 26 million years. During that period, repeated volcanic eruptions occurred in the area of the Never Summer Mountains, depositing volcanic debris across the land. One flow of hot ash reached this far, eventually cooling and hardening into the rock that forms the cliffs today. Glacial activity further shaped the landscape, carving into the hillside and exposing a cross-section of Precambrian rock, creating the lava cliffs visible from the overlook. The contrast between the dark lava cliffs, snow banks, and alpine meadows creates a striking visual. Visitors can often spot wildlife, such as prairie falcons and elk, in the area. Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous paved road in the United States, is a scenic byway that traverses Rocky Mountain National Park, connecting Estes Park and Grand Lake. The road itself is a historic landmark, offering numerous overlooks and hiking trails along its 48-mile stretch. However, due to heavy snowfall, the road is typically closed from mid-October to late May.
