Discover more about Trail Ridge Road Summit

Trail Ridge Road, appropriately nicknamed the "Highway to the Sky", is a 48-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 34 that traverses Rocky Mountain National Park, connecting Estes Park on the east to Grand Lake on the west. Completed in 1938, it was built to replace the Fall River Road, which was deemed inadequate for the increasing number of vehicles. The road reaches a maximum elevation of 12,183 feet (3,713 m), making it the highest continuous paved road in North America. For centuries, the Trail Ridge area has served as a passage across the mountains. The Arapaho Indians called the trail "taienbaa" ("Where the Children Walked"), because its steepness required even children to walk. The Ute tribe marked their route at Forest Canyon Pass with stone cairns. Construction on Trail Ridge Road began in 1929 and finished in 1932, providing much-needed employment during the Great Depression. The road was carefully designed to minimize its impact on the landscape, using natural debris and construction techniques to blend with the environment. Driving Trail Ridge Road offers a unique experience, with the landscape transforming from lush forests to open alpine tundra. Numerous overlooks and short hiking trails provide opportunities to explore the area's natural beauty. Popular stops include Many Parks Curve, Forest Canyon Overlook, and Medicine Bow Curve. The Alpine Visitor Center, located near the summit, offers exhibits, information, a gift shop, and a café. Keep an eye out for wildlife, including elk and bighorn sheep, which are often seen traversing the meadows and crags. Note that Trail Ridge Road is open seasonally, typically from Memorial Day weekend through mid-October, depending on weather conditions. A timed-entry permit is required to enter Rocky Mountain National Park between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm from late May to early-to-mid October.
