Getting There

  • Driving

    From downtown Golden, head west on US-6. Take the exit for CO-93 N/Golden Gate Canyon Rd. Continue onto CO-93 N for about 1.4 miles, then turn left onto Golden Gate Canyon Rd. In approximately 3 miles, turn left onto Lookout Mountain Road. Follow Lookout Mountain Road to Colorow Road, and continue north to the parking lot at the Nature Center. Parking is free.

  • Public Transport

    From Denver, take the W Line light rail to Jefferson County Government Center–Golden Station. From there, transfer to the Ore Cart shuttle service, which is free and has multiple routes around Golden. Check the Ore Cart routes and schedules to see which route gets you closest to Lookout Mountain Road. From there, you may need to walk or take a taxi/rideshare to the Nature Center. A single ride on the W Line costs $3.00.

  • Walking

    If you are already near the Boettcher Mansion, follow the signs for the Lookout Mountain Nature Center. The Nature Center is located across the parking lot from the Boettcher Mansion. The walk is short and easy, allowing you to enjoy the formal gardens of the Boettcher Mansion along the way.

Lookout Mountain Nature Center and Preserve offers visitors a chance to immerse themselves in the diverse wildlife habitats and scenic overlooks near Golden, Colorado. This 1,600-acre protected area sits on the eastern slope of Lookout Mountain, preserving ecosystems like ponderosa pine forests and mixed-grass prairies. The Nature Center serves as an educational hub, featuring exhibits about local ecology, geology, and native wildlife. Kids can enjoy a hands-on playroom and observation room. The center also provides free naturalist-led programs throughout the year for individuals, families, and school groups. Visitors can explore well-maintained trails of varying lengths and difficulties. The Lookout Mountain Overlook provides sweeping views of Denver, the Front Range, and the high Rockies. The preserve is home to abundant wildlife, including mule deer, mountain lions, bobcats, and various bird species. Lookout Mountain itself has historical ties to early Colorado mining and the nearby Buffalo Bill Museum and Grave. The Lookout Mountain Nature Center shares its site with the Boettcher Mansion. Charles Boettcher purchased the property around 1916 and built Lorraine Lodge in 1917 as a summer home. In 1972, Charles Boettcher's granddaughter bequeathed the 110-acre property to Jefferson County. The mansion was remodeled and opened as a conference and nature center in 1975.
