Discover more about Brevnov Monastery Brewery of St. Adalbert

The Břevnov Monastery Brewery of St. Adalbert stands as a testament to Bohemia's enduring brewing heritage. Founded in 993 AD alongside the Břevnov Monastery, it holds the distinction of being the oldest documented brewery in the Czech Republic. Legend says that the monastery was founded on January 14, 993, by Prague Bishop Vojtěch and Czech Prince Boleslav II. The name of the monastery is derived from a wooden log (brevno) that lay in a spring where they met. For centuries, the brewery served as an integral part of the monastery's economic foundation. However, its operations were disrupted multiple times throughout history. The brewery was almost entirely destroyed during the Hussite wars in the 1420s. According to the monastery chronicle, a new brewery was constructed in 1720. Beer production ceased in 1889 due to the cellar's limited capacity, and the building was demolished in 1953 during the expansion of Patočkova Street. In 2011, the St. Adalbert Břevnov Monastic Brewery was founded to revive the tradition of beer production. The brewery is located in the baroque building of the former stables. Today, the brewery produces a variety of beers, including traditional Czech lagers and international top-fermented styles. Visitors can enjoy these beers at the Klášterní výčep (Taproom) in the historic Baroque granary and at the Klášterní šenk restaurant. The brewery also houses a small museum and a permanent glassware exhibition. The Břevnov Monastery complex, including the brewery, was returned to the Benedictine order in 1990 and is now protected as a national cultural monument. Visitors can explore the peaceful gardens, the Orangery, and the Chapel of St. Joseph.
