The Delaware Botanic Gardens at Pepper Creek, a 37-acre oasis near Dagsboro, Delaware, offers a serene escape into nature. Opened in 2019, the gardens arose from the vision of local residents passionate about horticulture and conservation. What was once a soybean field has been transformed into a diverse landscape of native plants, meadows, and woodlands. The gardens feature several distinct areas, including the Piet Oudolf Meadow, a two-acre showcase of perennials and grasses designed by the internationally acclaimed Dutch plantsman. This meadow, originally planted with 85% native plants, provides food and habitat for bees, butterflies, and birds. Other highlights include the Rhyne Garden, which manages stormwater runoff with a beautiful display of native shrubs and flowering plants; the Folly Garden, built on the site of a former farmhouse; and the Woodland Garden, a 12.5-acre riparian forest with freshwater wetlands. Visitors can explore over a mile and a half of trails that wind through the gardens and into the woodlands. Guided tours are available, offering insights into the gardens' design, plants, and wildlife.
