Discover more about Fort Miles Historical Area

Nestled within Cape Henlopen State Park, where the Delaware Bay meets the Atlantic Ocean, lies the Fort Miles Historical Area, a significant relic of World War II. Built between 1941 and 1944, Fort Miles served as a crucial coastal defense base, safeguarding vital trade centers like Wilmington and Philadelphia from potential German attacks. At its peak, the fort housed over 2,300 soldiers and civilian personnel, with heavy guns, minefields, and searchlights ready to defend against enemy naval forces. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved historical site, including Battery 519, a 15,000-square-foot underground bunker transformed into a museum with exhibits and artifacts that bring Delaware's wartime stories to life. Tour the battery to discover the threats and how Fort Miles planned to defend the United States. See the artillery pieces that helped protect the entrance of the Delaware Bay. The area also features six barracks buildings, a fire control tower offering scenic vistas, and the Fort Miles Artillery Park. After World War II, Fort Miles transitioned to a post-war defense installation, playing a role in developing new weapons technology and monitoring Soviet submarines during the Cold War. In 1996, the U.S. Navy decommissioned its reserve units, and the land was handed over to Cape Henlopen State Park. Since 2003, the Fort Miles Historical Association and Delaware State Parks have worked to preserve and restore the site, ensuring its historical significance is not forgotten.
