Discover more about Laguna Quilotoa

Laguna Quilotoa, a breathtaking crater lake in the Ecuadorian Andes, is a must-see destination for any traveler seeking natural beauty and cultural immersion. Formed approximately 800 years ago by the collapse of a volcano after a massive eruption, the caldera has since filled with water, creating a mesmerizing turquoise lake. The name 'Quilotoa' originates from the local Quechua language. Located in the Cotopaxi province, about 178 km (111 miles) southwest of Quito, Quilotoa sits at an elevation of around 3,900 meters (12,800 feet), offering panoramic views of the lake and surrounding mountain ranges. The lake itself is approximately 3 kilometers (2 miles) wide and 250 meters (820 feet) deep. The turquoise color of the water is due to dissolved minerals. Visitors can hike around the rim of the crater, a challenging but rewarding trek that takes approximately 3-5 hours, offering stunning views along the way. For a closer experience, a steep, sandy trail leads down to the lake shore. Kayaks are available for rent, allowing visitors to explore the lake's serene waters. The Quilotoa area is also home to indigenous communities who maintain their traditional way of life. The village of Quilotoa, located near the lake, offers basic accommodations and a chance to experience local culture. The Quilotoa Loop, a multi-day trek through the surrounding Andean highlands, is a popular option for adventurous travelers. Along the way, you can visit local markets, cheese factories and admire the Tigua art, colorful paintings on sheepskin that depict daily life in the Andes. Whether you're seeking stunning landscapes, challenging hikes, or a glimpse into Andean culture, Laguna Quilotoa offers an unforgettable experience.
