Discover more about Pyramid of Menkaure

The Pyramid of Menkaure, also known as the Pyramid of Mykerinos, is the southernmost and smallest of the main pyramids on the Giza Plateau. Constructed during Egypt's Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom (circa 2532-2503 BC), it served as the tomb of Pharaoh Menkaure. While smaller in scale compared to the Great Pyramid of Khufu and the Pyramid of Khafre, Menkaure's pyramid possesses a unique charm and historical importance. Originally, the pyramid stood at a height of 65.5 meters (215 feet), but now stands at 61 meters (200 feet) tall. It was built with limestone and Aswan granite, with the lower section featuring a distinctive granite cladding. The complex also includes a mortuary temple, a valley temple, a causeway, and three subsidiary pyramids. Although the pyramid was built around the 26th century BC, the walls, mortuary, and valley temples weren't completed until after the pharaoh's death. Inside, the pyramid features more complex chambers than those of Khafre, including decorative panels and six large niches. The black stone sarcophagus discovered within was unfortunately lost at sea in 1838 during transport to England. In 1196 AD, Al-Aziz Uthman, Saladin's son, attempted to demolish the pyramids, starting with Menkaure's. The effort was ultimately unsuccessful, but it left a visible gash on the pyramid's northern face. Visiting the Pyramid of Menkaure offers a unique perspective on ancient Egyptian architecture and history. While the burial chamber remains empty, the pyramid's structure and surrounding complex provide insights into the funerary practices and beliefs of the time.
