Discover more about The Seal Woman (Kópakonan)

The Seal Woman (Kópakonan) statue stands on the coast of Mikladalur village on Kalsoy island, representing one of the Faroe Islands' most famous folktales. The legend tells of seals that were once humans who chose to die in the ocean, and were allowed to return to land one night each year in human form. A farmer from Mikladalur hid and watched as the seals shed their skins, stealing the skin of a beautiful seal woman. Without her skin, she could not return to the sea and was forced to become his wife. Years later, the farmer left the key to the chest containing her skin at home, and she seized the opportunity to return to her seal family, cursing Mikladalur. According to the legend, so many from Mikladalur would perish at sea that the drowned could link hands and encircle Kalsoy island. The statue, erected in 2014, serves as a tribute to this haunting saga. Visitors can appreciate the dramatic coastal scenery and immerse themselves in the island's folklore. The statue is located at 16 Bakkavegur in Mikladalur.
