Discover more about Risin og Kellingin viewpoint

Nestled on the rugged coast of Eysturoy Island in the Faroe Islands, the Risin og Kellingin viewpoint is a must-visit for those seeking breathtaking natural beauty. This vantage point provides unparalleled views of the dramatic sea stacks, Risin and Kellingin, which translate to 'The Giant and the Witch'. These towering basalt formations stand defiant against the crashing waves of the North Atlantic, embodying the wild and untamed spirit of the Faroe Islands. According to Faroese legend, these stacks were once an Icelandic giant and witch tasked with stealing the Faroe Islands. They attempted to tie the islands together to drag them back to Iceland, but their efforts were thwarted by the rising sun, which turned them to stone. Today, they remain as silent sentinels, gazing longingly towards their homeland. Risin stands at 71 meters (233 feet), while Kellingin reaches 69 meters (226 feet). The viewpoint itself is easily accessible and offers a perfect spot for both casual visitors and avid photographers. The surrounding area features well-marked trails that wind through lush green hills and along the jagged coastline, offering an invigorating sense of adventure. From the viewpoint, you can witness the dramatic interplay of light and shadow across the cliffs, especially during sunrise and sunset. The area is also rich in wildlife, with various seabirds soaring overhead. While visiting, be aware that Faroese geologists predict that Kellingin, the stack nearest the shore, may fall into the sea within the next few decades due to winter storms. Part of the stack already broke off in the early 20th century.
